In the middle of the first month of the twelfth year of Bun'ei (wood-boar, 1275), while staying temporarily at Kōzan-ji in Togano'o to listen to the thirty lectures on the Treatise on the Five Teachings (Wujiaozhang), I borrowed five fascicles of the punctuated text of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra [Biography] from the hands of the resident monk of that monastery, Nichibō Benshō. Filled with joy engraved upon my heart, after going down to the Southern Capital, I commissioned skilled scribes to copy it. Within these biographies, as for the present fascicle: for the front text, I commissioned Chō'yu of Jōkakubō in Nakagawa; for the back text, I commissioned Kakugen of Gan'ninbō at Shion'in at the foot of Mount Kasuga to copy it. The director of that cloister, Nyōenbo Chōkai, had already added kana and indicated surnames. These notes on kana and surnames on the reverse were recorded by Lord Akitada, the Lay Monk and Provisional Major Counselor of Tsuchimikado. Copying it directly from that Zen layman's own punctuated manuscript, this may serve as an peerless authoritative exemplar, nothing more.
