Vinaya Master Yuan of Yanxingsi in the capital was rigorous in his virtuous conduct and strictly maintained the prohibitive precepts. During the Zhenguan era, while passing through Ba Bridge, he stayed at an inn. As the sun was setting, he lodged there. Soon an extraordinary monk arrived, wearing coarse and worn garments. The innkeeper lodged him in a separate room, whereupon [the monk] called for rich wine and fine meat, drinking and eating to his heart's content. The Vinaya Master's conduct was as pure as ice and frost, and he abruptly took offense at such defilement. When that monk finished eating, he rinsed his mouth with ash and beans, closed the door to his room, and recited the Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra. In an instant, one scroll was completed. Yuan pulled himself upright, and holding feelings of shame, waited listening to the profound sound. Before the fifth watch, [the monk] had completed six cases. Yuan deeply reproached himself with remorse, his chest brimming with grief and tears, and entered the room to bow and confess. Thereupon they parted, [the monk] not giving his name, and his whereabouts remained unknown.
