10.14

僧問。南泉云。貍奴白牯却知有。三世諸佛不知有。為什麼三世諸佛不知有。師曰。未入鹿苑時猶較些子。僧曰。貍奴白牯為什麼却知有。師曰。汝爭怪得伊。僧問。和尚繼嗣何人。師曰。我無人得繼嗣。僧曰。還參學也無。師曰。我自參學。僧曰。師意如何。師有偈曰。

A monk asked, "Nanquan said: 'Wildcats and white bullocks know it exists, but the Buddhas of the three periods do not know it exists.' Why do the Buddhas of the three periods not know it exists?"
The Master said, "Before entering the Deer Park, they were still somewhat closer."
The monk said, "Why do wildcats and white bullocks know it exists?"
The Master said, "How could you blame them?"
A monk asked, "Whose succession did the Venerable inherit?"
The Master said, "I had no one to succeed."
The monk said, "Did you still study and practice?"
The Master said, "I studied and practiced by myself."
The monk said, "What was the Master's intention?"
The Master delivered a verse:
