Chan Master Cangyi of Jiahe was a native of Xin’an in Quzhou. His secular surname was Cheng. During the Yuanhe era of the Tang, he bid farewell to his parents and went to Yuelu Temple in Changsha, where he bowed to Vinaya Master Lingzhi and left home. In the third year of Changqing, he received the precepts at Kaiyuan Temple in Wuling. While listening to the Vinaya section, he said to his fellow students, “The gates of teaching are vast and manifold; we ought to knock at the overarching gate.” Thereupon, by karmic affinity, he met Chan Master Chang of Mount Longya. Longya told him, “The aggregates and realms are not real; the Buddha and sentient beings are not me. What should your original source be named, and from whom can it be obtained?” With a single word, the Master realized enlightenment. He returned to Mount Ke to avoid the Huichang suppression. Later, he widely propagated the transformation of the Way at Longxing. In the middle of the third month of the sixth year of Qianfu, he passed away for good, at the age of eighty-two, with fifty-six years of monastic seniority.
