Upādhyāya Huoshan of Jinzhou. A monk from Yangshan arrived and announced himself: “The four rattan staves below Jiyun Peak; the Great Chan Buddha of the realm comes to pay respects.” (The Great Chan Buddha refers to Upādhyāya Jingtong of Huoshan in Jinzhou, of the twelve rolls.)
The Master thereupon called to the karmadāna: “Carry firewood!” (Also recorded as “Strike the bell!”)
The Great Chan Buddha walked off with hasty strides.
The Master heard that whenever a monk arrived to bow, Upādhyāya Mimeiyan would pin him with a wooden pitchfork. One day, the Master went to visit him. Upon meeting him, he did not bow, but went straight into Mimei’s embrace. Mimei patted the Master’s back three times. The Master stood up, clapped his hands, and said: “Elder brother, I have traveled a thousand miles only to return!” (Also recorded as: “Elder brother, you deceived me from three thousand miles away!”)
