11.26

福州壽山師解禪師行脚時。造洞山法席。洞山問云。闍梨生緣何處。師云。和尚若實問某甲。即是閩中人。洞山云。汝父名什麼。師云。今日蒙和尚致此一問。直得忘前失後。住壽山。上堂云。諸上坐。幸有真實言語相勸。諸兄弟合各自體悉。凡聖情盡體露真如。但一時卸劫從前虛妄攀緣塵垢心。如虛空相似。他時後日合識得些子好惡。閩師問曰。壽山年多少。師云。與虛空齊年。曰虛空年多少。師云。與壽山齊年。

When Chan Master Shijie of Shoushan in Fuzhou was on pilgrimage, he arrived at Dongshan's Dharma assembly. Dongshan asked, "Where is the ācārya's place of origin?" The Master said, "If the Upādhyāya asks me in truth, I am a native of Minzhong." Dongshan said, "What was your father's name?" The Master said, "Today, receiving this question from the Upādhyāya, I am completely made to forget what was before and lose what was behind." When he resided at Shoushan, he ascended the hall and said, "Sthaviras, fortunately there are true words of exhortation. All brothers should personally understand them for yourselves. When ordinary and holy sentiments are exhausted, the substance reveals True Suchness. Just put down all at once the former false, grasping, defiled mind of dust, making it like empty space. Someday in the future you will certainly recognize a little of good and bad." The military commander of Min asked, "How old is Shoushan?" The Master said, "Of the same age as empty space." [The commander] said, "How old is empty space?" The Master said, "Of the same age as Shoushan."
