Upādhyāya Juzhi of Mount Jinhua in Wuzhou initially lived in a hermitage. There was a nun named Shiji who arrived at the hermitage wearing a bamboo hat and holding a monk's staff. She walked around the Master three times and said, "If you can speak, I will take off my hat." She asked three times, but the Master had no reply to any of them. The nun then started to leave.
The Master said, "The day is getting late; please stay for one night."
The nun said, "If you can speak, I will stay." The Master again had no reply.
After the nun left, [the Master] sighed and said, "Although I inhabit the form of a great man, I lack the spirit of a great man. I intend to abandon the hermitage and travel to various places to seek instruction."
That night, the mountain deity told him, "You need not leave this mountain. A great bodhisattva will come to preach the Dharma for the Upādhyāya."
Sure enough, after ten days Upādhyāya Tianlong came to the hermitage. The Master welcomed him with bows and recounted the preceding events in full. Tianlong held up one finger and showed it to him. The Master had a great awakening right on the spot.
From then on, whenever a monk seeking instruction arrived, the Master only raised one finger and gave no other instruction. There was an attendant boy who was questioned outside by someone, "What essential Dharma does the Upādhyāya teach?" The boy held up a finger. When he returned, he related this to the Master. The Master severed his finger with a knife. The boy cried out and ran outside. The Master called to him once; the boy turned his head, and the Master held up a finger. The boy had an instantaneous awakening.
When the Master was about to pass away, he said to the assembly, "I obtained Tianlong's one-finger Chan, and have not exhausted its use throughout my whole life." Having spoken these words, he manifested cessation.
(Changqing spoke on behalf of the assembly, "Delicious food does not satisfy one who is already sated." Xuansha said, "Had I seen him at that time, I would have snapped his finger." Xuanjue said, "Now tell me, what was Xuansha's intention in speaking thus?" Yunju Xi said, "Just as Xuansha spoke in that manner, did he approve of him or not approve of him? If he approved, why did he say he would snap his finger? If he did not approve, where was Juzhi's fault?" The former Caoshan said, "The place where Juzhi undertook it was reckless. He only recognized one function, one realm, and one kind. That is clapping hands and striking palms; that was his strange matter of the Western Garden." Xuanjue said further, "Now tell me, was Juzhi awakened or not yet? If he was awakened, why is it said that the place where he undertook it was reckless? If he was not awakened, why did he say that he had not exhausted the use of the one-finger Chan? Now tell me, where did Caoshan's intention lie?")
