12.14

仰山西塔光穆禪師（第二世住）僧問。如何是正聞。師曰。不從耳入。曰作麼生。師曰。還聞麼。問祖意與教意同別。師曰。同別且置汝道瓶嘴裏什麼物出來入去。問如何是西來意。師曰。汝無佛性。問如何是頓。師作圓相示之。曰如何是漸。師以手空中撥三下。

Chan Master Guangmu of Xita on Mount Yang (the second-generation abbot). A monk asked, 'What is correct hearing?' The master said, 'It does not enter through the ear.' The monk said, 'How so?' The master said, 'Do you still hear?' [A monk] asked, 'Are the intention of the Patriarchs and the intention of the teachings the same or different?' The master said, 'Set same or different aside for now; tell me, what object goes in and comes out of the spout of a pitcher?' [A monk] asked, 'What is the meaning of coming from the West?' The master said, 'You have no Buddha-nature.' [A monk] asked, 'What is the sudden?' The master drew a circular figure to show him. [The monk] said, 'What is the gradual?' The master waved his hand in the air three times.
