12.18

仰山南塔光涌禪師。僧問。文殊是七佛師。文殊有師否。師云。遇緣即有。曰如何是文殊師。師竪拂子示之。僧曰。莫遮箇是麼。師放下拂子又手。問如何是妙用一句。師曰。水到渠成。問真佛住在何處。師曰。言下無相也不在別處。

Chan Master Guangyong of Nanta on Mount Yang. A monk asked, 'Mañjuśrī is the teacher of the seven Buddhas. Does Mañjuśrī have a teacher?' The master said, 'Encountering conditions, he has one.' The monk said, 'What is Mañjuśrī's teacher?' The master held up his fly-whisk to show him. The monk said, 'Could this be it?' The master lowered the fly-whisk and clasped his hands. [A monk] asked, 'What is the phrase of wonderful function?' The master said, 'When the water arrives, the channel is formed.' [A monk] asked, 'Where does the true Buddha dwell?' The master said, 'Beyond words there is no mark, nor is it in any other place.'
