12.22

幽州譚空和尚。有尼欲開堂說法。師曰。尼女家不用開堂。尼曰。龍女八歲成佛又作麼生。師曰。龍女有十八變。汝與老僧試一變看。尼曰。變得也是野狐精。師乃打趁。寶壽和尚問。除却中上二根人來時師兄作麼生。師曰。汝適來舉早錯也。壽曰。師兄也不得無過。師曰。汝却與我作師兄。壽側掌云。遮老賊。

Upādhyāya Tankong of Youzhou. A nun wished to inaugurate a hall and preach the Dharma. The master said, 'A nun has no need to open a hall.' The nun said, 'How about the dragon girl becoming a Buddha at eight years old?' The master said, 'The dragon girl had eighteen transformations. Try one transformation for this old monk to see.' The nun said, 'Even if I transformed, it would merely be a wild fox spirit.' The master then beat her out. Upādhyāya Baoshou asked, 'Setting aside people of middle and superior faculties, how does elder brother act when [someone of lower faculties] comes?' The master said, 'In raising it just now, you were already mistaken.' Baoshou said, 'Elder brother cannot be without fault either.' The master said, 'Instead, you are acting as elder brother to me!' Baoshou turned his palm sideways and said, 'This old thief!'
