12.52

雙峯古禪師（第二世）本業講經。因上雙峯禮謁。雙峯問云。大德什麼處住。曰城裏住。雙峯曰。尋常還思老僧否。曰常思和尚無由禮覲。雙峯曰。只遮思底便是大德。師從此領旨即歸本寺。捨所居罷講入山執侍數年。後到石霜但隨眾而已。更不參請。眾僉謂。古侍者甞受雙峯印記。往往聞于石霜。霜欲詰其所悟。而未得其便。師因辭石霜。霜將拂子送出門首召曰。古侍者。師迴首。石霜曰。擬著即差。是著即乖。不擬不是。亦莫作箇會。除非知有。莫能知之。好去好去。師應喏喏。即前邁尋屬雙峯歸寂。師乃繼續住持。僧問。和尚當時秖對石霜。石霜恁麼道意作麼生。師曰。只教我不著是非（玄覺云。且道他會石霜意不會）。

Chan Master Gu of Shuangfeng (second generation) originally had the vocation of lecturing on the sūtras. On climbing Mount Shuangfeng, he paid homage to [the master]. Shuangfeng asked, "Where does the Great Worthy reside?" He said, "I reside in the city." Shuangfeng said, "Do you usually think of this old monk?" He said, "I always think of the Upādhyāya, but have had no opportunity to pay homage." Shuangfeng said, "This very thinking one is the Great Worthy." Thereupon the master grasped the meaning and returned to his home temple. He abandoned his quarters, ceased lecturing, and entered the mountain to serve [Shuangfeng] for several years. Later, he went to Shishuang, where he simply followed the assembly without ever making inquiries. The assembly all said, "Attendant Gu once received the seal of Shuangfeng." This was often heard by Shishuang. Shishuang wished to interrogate him on what he had realized, but found no convenient occasion. Once, when the master took his leave of Shishuang, Shishuang escorted him to the gate with a fly whisk in hand, and called out, "Attendant Gu!" The master turned his head. Shishuang said, "If you form an intention, you err; if you affirm it, you go astray. Not forming an intention and not affirming it, do not make an understanding of that either. Unless one knows it is there, none can know it. Fare well, fare well." The master replied, "Yes, yes," and proceeded on his way. Soon thereafter Shuangfeng passed away, and the master succeeded him as abbot. A monk asked, "When the Upādhyāya responded to Shishuang at that time, what did Shishuang mean by speaking like that?" The master said, "He simply taught me not to attach to right and wrong." (Xuanjue said, "Now tell me, did he understand Shishuang's meaning, or not?")
