12.58

看他恁麼道也大殺惺惺。若比吾徒猶是鈍漢。所以一念見道三世情盡。如印印泥更無前後。諸子生死事大快須薦取。莫為等閑業識茫茫。蓋為迷己逐物。世尊臨入涅槃。文殊請佛再轉法輪。世尊咄文殊言。吾四十九年住世。不曾一字與人。汝請吾再轉法輪。是謂吾曾轉法輪也。然今時眾中建立箇賓主問答。事不獲已蓋為初心爾。僧問。如何是長慶境。師曰。闍梨履踐看。問如何是佛法大意。師曰。古人豈不道。今日三月三。僧曰。學人不會。師曰。止止不須說。我法妙難思。便下坐。咸平二年歸寂。

"Looking at him speaking thus, he was also exceedingly clever. Yet compared to our companions, he was still a dullard. Therefore, in a single thought seeing the Way, the feelings of the three periods of time are exhausted; like a stamp pressed into clay, there is neither before nor after. Brethren, the matter of birth and death is great; make haste to grasp it! Do not treat it lightly while karmic consciousness remains vast and dim, all because you are deluded about yourselves and pursue objects. When the World-Honoured One was about to enter nirvāṇa, Mañjuśrī requested the Buddha to turn the wheel of the Dharma once more. The World-Honoured One rebuked Mañjuśrī, saying, 'For forty-nine years I have dwelt in the world, yet I have never given a single word to anyone. When you ask me to turn the wheel of the Dharma once more, that implies I have turned the wheel of the Dharma before.' However, the present establishment of host and guest in dialogue among the assembly is an unavoidable matter, undertaken only for beginners." A monk asked, "What is the Changqing realm?" The master said, "Ācārya, try treading upon it." The monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha-Dharma?" The master said, "Did not the ancients say: 'Today is the third day of the third month'?" The monk said, "The student does not understand." The master said, "Stop, stop! There is no need to explain; my Dharma is subtle and difficult to conceive." He then stepped down from the seat. In the second year of Xianping, he passed away.
