Chan Master Rubao of Zifu in Ji Prefecture. A monk asked, "What is a phrase that responds to the potential?" The Master remained silent. The monk asked, "What is the profound purport?" The Master said, "Shut the door for me." The monk asked, "What was Luzu's intention in facing the wall?" The Master said, "No connection." The monk asked, "What is the truly correct Dharma eye passed down from antiquity?" The Master beat his chest and said, "Blue sky! Blue sky!" The monk said, "What harm is there in asking?" The Master said, "I am exhausted." The monk asked, "Can this be learned?" The Master said, "I have never hoed the ground to plant empty space." The monk asked, "What is the patched-robe monk's most urgent matter?" The Master said, "It does not exceed this question." The monk said, "Before the student asked, I ask the Master to speak." The Master said, "Alas!" The monk asked, "Every place displays marvelous functioning. I wonder how it is here with the Upādhyāya?" The Master said, "Alas!" The monk asked, "When the ancients raised the mallet or held up the fly-whisk, what principle was this?" The Master said, "Mute." The monk asked, "What is the one-way gate to nirvāṇa?" The Master snapped his fingers once and spread both hands open. The monk said, "How should I understand this?" The Master said, "It is not the bright autumn moon; the crab walks sideways eight or nine [steps]." The monk asked, "What is the Master's house style?" The Master said, "Three bowls of tea after a meal." One day, the Master held up a meditation cushion, showed it to the assembly, and said, "All the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and sages who enter principle have emerged from this place." Then, throwing it down, he tore open his chest and said, "What about it?" The assembly had no reply. A monk asked, "The student has newly entered the monastery, and the summer retreat is drawing to a close. Not yet having received the Master's instruction, I pray you deign to rescue me." The Master pushed the monk away and said, "Since this old monk became abbot, I have never blinded a single monk's eye." At times the Master sat for a good while, looked all around to his left and right, and said, "Do you understand?" The assembly said, "We do not understand." The Master said, "If you do not understand, I have deceived you." One day the Master placed his meditation cushion upon his head and said, "At such a time, it is difficult to converse with you all." The assembly had no reply. The Master then sat on it and said, "Still somewhat better."
