Upādhyāya Baoying of Ru Prefecture (also called Chan Master Yong, first-generation abbot of Nanyuan). Ascending the hall, he instructed the assembly: "Upon the red lump of flesh stands a wall a thousand cubits high." At that time a monk asked, "'Upon the red lump of flesh stands a wall a thousand cubits high'—is this not what the Master said?" The Master said, "It is." The monk then overturned the meditation platform. The Master said, "This blind donkey!" and gave him the staff. The Master asked a monk, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "Changshui." The Master said, "Flowing east or flowing west?" The monk said, "Neither at all." The Master said, "What about it?" The monk said, "Take care." The Master struck him and chased him down from the Dharma hall. A monk came for an interview. The Master raised his fly-whisk. The monk said, "A total failure today!" The Master lowered the fly-whisk. The monk said, "This still remains." The Master gave him the staff. The Master asked a monk, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "I have recently come from Xiang Prefecture." The Master said, "What have you come for?" The monk said, "I have come especially to pay homage to the Master." The Master said, "It so happens that old Baoying is not here." The monk shouted. The Master said, "I told you I am not here; why shout again?" The monk shouted again. The Master gave him the staff. The monk bowed. The Master said, "As for this blow with the staff, by rights you should strike me, but I strike you instead. Three to five blows of the staff are needed for this topic." Before Upādhyāya Siming of Daxing resided at Xiyuan, he came for an interview. After bowing, he said, "I have no other fine gifts from my travels; I bought a Jiangxi razor in Xu Prefecture to present to the Master." The Master said, "You came from Xu Prefecture; where did you get a Jiangxi razor?" Ming gave the Master's hand a pinch. The Master said, "Attendant, take it." Ming shook his sleeves and walked away. The Master said, "A-la-la!" The Master ascended the hall and said, "The other quarters only possess the eye of simultaneous tapping and pecking; they do not possess the functioning of simultaneous tapping and pecking." At that time a monk asked, "What is the functioning of simultaneous tapping and pecking?" The Master said, "When masters meet, there is no tapping and pecking; simultaneous tapping and pecking is a loss." The monk said, "This is not yet what I was asking." The Master said, "What then was your question?" The monk said, "A loss!" The Master struck him. That monk did not accept it. Later, while in the assembly of Yunmen, the monk heard two monks bring up this past encounter. One monk said, "At that time, Nanyuan's staff broke." Upon hearing these words, the monk suddenly had great enlightenment and only then saw the point of Nanyuan's answer. The monk then went back to Ru Prefecture to pay respects, but found that the Master had already passed away. He visited Fengxue. Fengxue recognized him and asked, "Are you the sthavira who back then asked Nanyuan about the matter of simultaneous tapping and pecking?" The monk said, "I am." Fengxue said, "Do you understand now?" The monk said, "I understand." Fengxue said, "How did you understand it at that time?" The monk said, "At that time, it was as if I was walking in the shadow of a lamp." Fengxue said, "You understand."
