Chan Master Siming of Xiyuan in Ru Prefecture. Someone asked, "What is a monastery (saṅghārāma)?" The Master said, "A thicket of thorns and briars." The person asked, "What kind of people reside in the monastery?" The Master said, "Badgers and raccoon dogs." A monk asked, "What is Linji's single shout?" The Master said, "A bow of a thousand jun is not triggered for a tiny mouse." The monk asked, "Where is the Master's compassion?" The Master struck him. When the monk Congyi had been at the Dharma assembly for ten days, he said, "Do not say there are people who understand the Buddha-Dharma; one cannot find even a single person who brings up a topic." The Master heard this and remained silent. Another day, when Congyi went up to the Dharma hall, the Master called out, "Congyi!" Congyi raised his head. The Master said, "Wrong!" Congyi took two or three steps forward. The Master said again, "Wrong!" Congyi approached closer still. The Master said, "Regarding the two 'wrongs' just now, was the sthavira wrong, or was old Siming wrong?" Congyi said, "Congyi was wrong." The Master said, "Wrong!" and added, "Sthavira, stay here for the summer retreat, and I will discuss these two 'wrongs' with you." Congyi would not agree and left immediately. Later he resided at Mount Tianping in Xiang Prefecture, and whenever he brought up this past dialogue, he would say, "When I was traveling on foot, I was blown by an ill wind to Ru Prefecture. The elder of Xiyuan tested me with three successive 'wrongs' and even tried to detain me for the summer retreat to discuss them. I did not say I was wrong at that time; the moment I set out my feet intending to head south, I already knew it was wrong." (Upādhyāya Shengnian of Mount Shou said, "Judging by Tianping's understanding, he has not even dreamed of Xiyuan yet. Why? The topic remains.")
