12.77

廬州大覺和尚。問牛頭未見四祖時為什麼鳥獸銜華。師曰。有恁麼畜生。曰見後為什麼不來銜華。師曰。無恁麼畜生。

Upādhyāya Dajue of Lu Prefecture. A monk asked, "Before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch, why did birds and beasts hold flowers in their beaks [for him]?" The Master said, "There were such beasts." The monk asked, "Why did they not come holding flowers in their beaks after he saw him?" The Master said, "There were no such beasts."
