12.79

汝州南院和尚。問匹馬單槍來時如何。師曰。待我斫棒。問上上根器人還接否。師曰接。僧曰。便請師接。師曰。且得平交。師問新到僧。近離什麼處。曰漢上。師曰。汝也罪過我也罪過。僧無語。師見新到僧乃搊住曰。作麼生作麼生。僧無對。師曰。三十年馬騎今日却被驢撲（一作學馬伎又作弄馬騎）。有僧新到。師曰敗也乃拋下柱杖。僧曰。恁麼語話。師便打。

Upādhyāya Nanyuan of Ru Prefecture. A monk asked, "How is it when one comes on a single horse with a single spear?" The Master said, "Wait until I cut a staff." The monk asked, "Do you receive those of the highest capacity?" The Master said, "I receive them." The monk said, "Then I invite the Master to receive me." The Master said, "For now we meet on equal terms." The Master asked a newly arrived monk, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "Hanshang." The Master said, "You are at fault, and I am at fault." The monk was speechless. Seeing a newly arrived monk, the Master grabbed him and said, "What about it? What about it?" The monk had no reply. The Master said, "Thirty years of riding horses, and today I am thrown by a donkey!" (Also written as: "learning horse tricks"; or: "performing horse riding".) A newly arrived monk came. The Master said, "Defeated!" and threw down his staff. The monk said, "Talking like that!" The Master struck him.
