The Master entered the hall and said: "The ancestral master's mind-seal is today fully presented. Going, it seals and stays; staying, it seals and breaks. Just as in neither going nor staying: is sealing it, or is not-sealing it? Is there anyone in the assembly who can say a word?" At that time, Elder Lubei asked: "This student has the functioning of an iron ox; I invite the Master not to apply the seal." The Master said: "Accustomed to angling for whales and clearing the great ocean, / I sigh instead at the snail's crawl floundering in mud and sand." Lubei was about to advance a word, but the Master struck him right across the mouth with his whisk and said: "Do you remember the previous words?" Lubei said: "I remember." The Master said: "Try to cite them and let me see." Lubei was about to open his mouth when the Master struck him again with the whisk. Entering the hall, he addressed the assembly, saying: "Those who train and study with clear eyes, when meeting the moment, must have the great function appear before them right away; do not bind yourselves with small details. Even if you understand before words are spoken, that is still remaining stuck in the shell and confused by the envelope. Even if you are thoroughly versed beneath the phrases, you cannot avoid mad views when confronting situations. Looking at all of you, from former times you have relied on other people's intellectual understanding, blinded by dualistic paths. Now, I will sweep them all away for you at once, so that each of you becomes a great lion cub: letting out a roaring growl, standing steep as a wall of a thousand fathoms! Who would dare to look at you with the correct eye? If anyone looks at you, it will blind their eyes!" A monk asked: "Whose tune does the Master sing? Whose tradition of the school do you succeed to?" The Master said: "Transcending far beyond Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja; / standing on one foot in vain, praising Tiṣya."
