Chan Master Cuiwei Wuxue of Mount Zhongnan in Jingzhao. When he first asked Danxia, "Who is the master of all Buddhas?" Danxia scolded, "Fortunately, you were quite lovable; why must you hold a cloth and broom?" The Master took three steps back. Danxia said, "Wrong." The Master immediately stepped forward. Danxia said, "Wrong, wrong." The Master raised one foot, spun his body around once, and went out. Danxia said, "Though you have got it, you have turned your back on those Buddhas." Thereupon the Master grasped the meaning and resided at Cuiwei. Touzi asked, "I wonder, when the Second Patriarch first met Bodhidharma, what did he attain?" The Master said, "Now that you see me, what do you attain?" One day, the Master was walking inside the Dharma hall. Touzi stepped forward, greeted him with a bow, and asked, "How does the Upādhyāya show people the esoteric import of coming from the West?" The Master paused his steps for a short while. [Touzi] again said, "I beg the Master to condescend to instruct." The Master said, "Why do you need a second ladle of foul water?" Touzi bowed in gratitude and stepped back. The Master said, "Do not pile it up." Touzi said, "When the time comes, sprouts naturally emerge." Once, when the Master was making offerings to the arhats, a monk asked, "Danxia burned a wooden Buddha; why does the Upādhyāya make offerings to arhats?" The Master said, "If he burned it, it was not burned; making offerings is also entirely left to making offerings." [The monk] also asked, "When offerings are made to the arhats, do the arhats come or not?" The Master said, "Do you still eat every day?" The monk had no words. The Master said, "Rare are those who are sharp-witted."
