14.39

宣州椑樹慧省禪師。洞山參師。師問曰。來作什麼。洞山曰。來親近和尚。師曰。若是親近用動兩片皮作麼。洞山無對（曹山後聞乃云。一子親得）僧問。如何是佛。師曰。猫兒上露柱。曰學人不會。師曰。問取露柱去。

Chan Master Huisheng of Paishu in Xuanzhou: Dongshan came to study under the Master. The Master asked, “What have you come to do?” Dongshan said, “I have come to draw close to the Venerable.” The Master said, “If you are drawing close, why bother moving two flaps of skin?” Dongshan had no reply. (Caoshan later heard of this and said, “A single child has become close.”) A monk asked, “What is the Buddha?” The Master said, “A cat climbing an exposed pillar.” [The monk] said, “Your student does not understand.” The Master said, “Go ask the exposed pillar.”
