15.13

建州白雲約禪師（曾住江州東禪院）僧問。不坐偏空堂。不居無學位。此人合向什麼處安置。師曰。青天無電影。天台韶和尚參。師問。什麼處來。韶曰。江北來。師曰。船來陸來。曰船來。師曰。還逢見魚鼈麼。曰往往遇之。師曰。遇時作麼生。韶曰。咄縮頭去。師大笑。

Chan Master Baiyun Yue of Jianzhou (who once resided at Dongchan Cloister in Jiangzhou). A monk asked, "Not sitting in the hall of partial emptiness, not abiding in the rank beyond learning—where should such a person be placed?" The Master said, "The blue sky has no flash of lightning." Upādhyāya Tiantai Shao came to study. The Master asked, "Where have you come from?" Shao said, "From north of the river." The Master said, "Did you come by boat or by land?" [Shao] said, "By boat." The Master said, "Did you happen to see any fish and turtles?" [Shao] said, "I frequently encountered them." The Master said, "When you encountered them, what happened?" Shao said, "Tut! Drawing in their heads!" The Master laughed heartily.
