15.17

祿清和尚僧問。不落道吾機請師道。師云。庭前紅莧樹生葉不生華。良久云。會麼。僧云。不會。師云。正是道吾機因什麼不會。僧禮拜。師便打云。須是老僧打爾始得。

Upādhyāya Luqing. A monk asked, "Without falling into Daowu's mechanism, please speak, Master." The Master said, "The red amaranth in front of the courtyard produces leaves but does not produce flowers." After a long pause, he said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "This is precisely Daowu's mechanism; why don't you understand?" The monk bowed. The Master struck him and said, "It requires this old monk to hit you before you get it!"
