Chan Master Huanpu of Shaoshan in the Western Capital of Luoyang. A monk came to pay respects, bowed, and stood up. The Master said, "Great talent conceals its clumsy household." The monk stepped aside and stood. The Master said, "A pillar-and-beam timber is lost." Zun the Cloth-Robed Monk met the Master at the foot of the mountain and asked, "Where is Shaoshan?" The Master said, "Where the bamboo is lush and green, that is it." Zun said, "Could it be just this, or not?" The Master said, "If it is, it is; what business do you have, ācārya?" [Zun] said, "I intend to present a question; I wonder if the Master will answer it?" The Master said, "Seeing that you are not made of gold teeth, how could you know how to draw a bow and shoot Yuchi?" Zun said, "The phoenix enters straight into the smoky clouds; who fears the wild magpies in the woods?" The Master said, "The painted drum right before the porch is yours to strike; try displaying a house style resembling this old monk's." Zun said, "A single phrase far surpasses the standards of present and past; the pine moss does not rank equal with the moon disc." The Master said, "Even if you directly go beyond the Sound of Majesty (Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja), you are still half a month's journey short of Shaoshan." Zun said, "Where does the fault lie?" The Master said, "Unconventional words are known to the people of the time." Zun said, "If so, then the true jade is distinct in the mud, not stirring the dust of myriad activities." The Master said, "Beneath the gate of Lu Ban, one displays ingenious craft in vain." Zun said, "The student is just so; what is the Master's intention?" The Master said, "The jade maiden throws the shuttle at night, sending brocade to the western dwelling." Zun said, "Might that not be the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "A plowman sets up a jade drill-plow (The *Shiyuan* by Master Qing says: It should be read as jade *lou*, meaning a drill-plow; farmers use a drill-plow to distribute seeds. When Chan records speak of 'looking at the line and driving the drill,' this is precisely what is meant. The *Weilüe* says: When Huangfu Yin was governor of Dunhuang, the people did not understand farming, so he taught them to make drill-plows, saving more than half the labor. However, the drill-plow is a tool for dry planting; southerners mostly do not recognize it, hence it is explained in detail. Pronounced *lou*); this is not the work of a professional." Zun said, "This is literary language; what is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Laying my body across the universe, who is the person who steps forward?" In the end, he was posthumously titled Chan Master Wuwei (Fearless).
