17.36

福州羅源聖壽嚴和尚。有僧自泉州迴來參。師補衲次提起示之曰。山僧一衲衣展似眾人見。雲水請兩條莫教露針線快道。僧無對。師曰。如許多時在彼作什麼。

Upādhyāya Yan of Shengshou in Luoyuan, Fuzhou. A monk returned from Quanzhou to visit. While mending his patched robe, the master held it up, showed it to him, and said, "This mountain monk spreads out a single patched robe for all to see. You waters and clouds, please give two lines; do not let the needle and thread show—speak quickly!" The monk had no reply. The master said, "For so much time over there, what have you been doing?"
