17.40

襄州鷲嶺善本禪師。因入浴室。有僧問。和尚是離垢底人。為什麼却浴。師曰。定水湛然滿浴此無垢人。問祖意教意是同是別。師曰。鷲嶺峯上青草森天。鹿野苑中狐兔交橫。

Chan Master Shanben of Mount Jiuling in Xiangzhou. Once, when he entered the bathhouse, a monk asked, "The upādhyāya is one who is free from defilement; why then do you bathe?" The master said, "The samādhi water is calm and full; it bathes this defilement-free person." A monk asked, "Are the ancestral intention and the doctrinal intention the same or different?" The master said, "Upon the peak of Vulture Peak, green grass reaches the sky; within the Deer Park, foxes and hares crisscross."
