17.55

洪州泐潭延茂禪師。僧問。如何是古佛心。師曰。終不道土木瓦礫是。問日落西山去林中事若何。師曰。庭前紅華秀室內不知春。

Chan Master Yanmao of Letan in Hongzhou. A monk asked, "What is the ancient Buddha mind?" The master said, "In the end I would not say it is earth, wood, tiles, or rubble." A monk asked, "When the sun sinks behind the western hills, what are the affairs in the forest?" The master said, "In front of the courtyard, red flowers flourish; inside the room, one knows nothing of spring."
