Chan Master Shao of Liutong Monastery in Taizhou. When he first called upon Upādhyāya Yongquan, he entered the room and grasped the essential principle. One day, returning to the monastery after burning brush for planting, Yongquan asked, "Where have you come from?" The Master said, "I have come from burning brush." Yongquan said, "What about the matter after the fire?" Shao said, "An iron snake cannot bore in." Yongquan approved of him. Later he resided at Liutong Monastery, where followers of the mysterious gathered around him. A monk asked, "What is the matter that does not leave the throat and lips?" The Master said, "Wait until you sever Mount Jinzi with a single hoe, and I still will not speak to you." [A monk] asked, "There is a poisonous dragon on the Southern Mountain; how can one approach it?" The Master said, "Not only the ācārya, but even a thousand sages cannot approach it." Someone asked, "I have heard that in the south there is a saying about a single sword. What is the single sword?" The Master said, "It does not face the edge." [The person] said, "What if the head falls off?" The Master said, "I say it does not face the edge; what head is there?" The person bowed in gratitude and departed. The Master retired after the summer retreat, entered Huading Peak on Mount Tiantai to conceal his traces, and his end is not known.
