18.15

漳州報恩院懷岳禪師泉州人也。少依本州聖壽院受業。罷參雪峯止龍溪玄侶奔湊。僧問。十二時中如何行履。師曰。動即死。曰不動時如何。師曰。猶是守古冢鬼。問如何是學人出身處。師曰。有什麼物纏縛闍梨。曰爭奈出身不得何。師曰。過在阿誰。問如何是報恩一靈物。師曰。喫如許多酒糟作麼。曰還露脚手也無。師曰。遮裏是什麼處所。僧問。牛頭未見四祖時如何。師曰。萬里一片雲。曰見後如何。師曰廓落地。僧問。如何是佛法大意。師曰。昨夜三更失却火。問黑雲斗暗誰當雨者。師曰。峻處先傾。問宗乘不却如何舉唱。師曰。山不自稱水無間斷。問佛未出世時如何。師曰。汝爭得知。問撥塵見佛時如何。師曰。什麼年中得見來。問師子在窟時如何。師曰。師子是什麼家具。又問。師子出窟時如何。師曰。師子在什麼處。問如何是目前佛。師曰。快禮拜。師臨遷化上堂示眾曰。山僧十二年來舉提宗教。諸人怪我什麼處。若要聽三經五論。此去開元寺咫尺。言訖告寂。

Chan Master Huaiyue of Bao'en Monastery in Zhangzhou was a native of Quanzhou. In his youth, he took up studies relying on Shengshou Monastery in his native prefecture. Ending his study with Xuefeng, he stayed at Longxi, where companions of the profound rushed to gather. A monk asked, "How should one practice during the twelve periods of the day?" The Master said, "Moving is dying." [The monk] said, "How is it when not moving?" The Master said, "Still a ghost guarding an ancient mound." [A monk] asked, "What is the student's place of liberation?" The Master said, "What thing binds the Ācārya?" [The monk] said, "What can be done about not being able to free oneself?" The Master said, "Whose fault is it?" [A monk] asked, "What is the one spiritual thing of Bao'en?" The Master said, "Why eat so much distiller's grain?" [The monk] said, "Does it still reveal feet and hands?" The Master said, "What kind of place is this here?" A monk asked, "How was it before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch?" The Master said, "A patch of cloud over ten thousand miles." [The monk] said, "How was it after seeing him?" The Master said, "Vast and open." A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Last night at the third watch, the fire was lost." [A monk] asked, "When black clouds gather in darkness, who will bring rain?" The Master said, "The precipitous place collapses first." [A monk] asked, "When the ancestral vehicle is not rejected, how is it expounded?" The Master said, "Mountains do not praise themselves; waters flow without interruption." [A monk] asked, "How was it before the Buddha appeared in the world?" The Master said, "How could you know?" [A monk] asked, "How is it when wiping away the dust to see the Buddha?" The Master said, "In what year did you manage to see him?" [A monk] asked, "How is it when the lion is in the cave?" The Master said, "What kind of household utensil is a lion?" [The monk] asked again, "How is it when the lion comes out of the cave?" The Master said, "Where is the lion?" [A monk] asked, "What is the Buddha before one's eyes?" The Master said, "Quickly bow!" When the Master was about to pass away, he ascended the hall and instructed the assembly, saying, "For twelve years this mountain monk has brought forth and raised the teachings of our ancestral school. In what place do you blame me? If you want to hear the three sūtras and five treatises, Kaiyuan Temple is just a short distance from here." Having finished speaking, he announced his demise.
