Master Renhui Xingtao of Xianzhong Monastery in Fuzhou was a native of Quanzhou whose lay surname was Wang. He received his training at Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture. He joined Xuefeng’s Chan assembly, and his renown was heard far and wide. The military commander of Min requested him to turn the wheel of the Dharma, and seekers of the mystery rushed to him. He ascended the hall and said, “I studied together with Śākyamuni. Tell me, what person did we study with?” At that time a monk stepped out, bowed, and was about to ask a question, when the Master said, “Wrong.” A monk asked, “What is the meaning of the coming from the west?” The Master said, “Xionger was never concealed.” He asked, “Regarding the immediate matter, please grant your skillful means, Master.” The Master said, “If not for your question, I would not speak of it either.” He asked, “What is the meaning of the coming from the west?” The Master said, “In broad daylight there are no idle people.”
