Master Lingcan, Yongming Dashi of Cuiyan in Mingzhou, was a native of Huzhou. Having received the prediction from Xuefeng, he stayed at Cuiyan and vastly expanded the Dharma gathering. A monk asked, "Without borrowing the three-inch tongue, please speak, Master." The Master said, "Go to the tea hall and be criticized." A monk asked, "What was the National Teacher's intention in calling his attendant three times?" The Master said, "Why oppress the man?" A monk said, "I do not ask about the rest." The Master remained silent. The monk said, "How should I present this to others?" The Master called to his attendant, "Bring tea." The Master entered the hall and said, "This summer I have conversed and debated with all my brothers. See whether Cuiyan's eyebrows are still there!" (Changqing heard this recounted and said, "They have grown back.") A monk asked, "All spoken words and phrases are defilements. What is the transcendental matter?" The Master said, "All spoken words and phrases are defilements." A monk asked, "What is this essential point?" The Master said, "The great assembly is laughing at you." A monk asked, "What is it like when one is calm and unobstructed by sharp edges?" The Master said, "Many people hold this view." The monk said, "What is it ultimately?" The Master said, "Calm and unobstructed by sharp edges." A monk asked, "What was the meaning of the ancients raising a mallet or holding up a whisk?" The Master said, "Heterodox ways are hard to support." A monk asked, "Why was Sengyou unable to paint the likeness of Master Baozhi?" The Master said, "How could it be brought to a close?" A monk asked, "On a perilous path, what serves as a ferry bridge?" The Master said, "Yaoshan repeatedly instructed [us]." A monk asked, "Not bearing ordinary or holy, what do you show to the faculty at hand?" The Master said, "Do not tell others that Cuiyan is sharp-witted." A monk asked, "When subtle functioning, words, and phrases are all inappropriate to the matter of the ancestral vehicle, what then?" The Master said, "Pay homage!" The monk said, "The student does not understand." The Master said, "Leaving home and traveling on pilgrimage, and you do not even understand how to pay homage!" King Qian admired the Master's style of the Way and invited him to reside at Longce Temple, where he ended his days.
