19.10

杭州龍井通禪師。處棲上座問。如何是龍井龍。師曰。意氣天然別。神筆畫不成。曰為什麼畫不成。師曰。出群不戴角不與類中同。曰還解行雨也無。師曰。普潤無邊際處處皆結粒。曰還有宗門中事也無。師曰有。曰如何是宗門中事。師曰從來無形段應物不曾虧。問如何是吹毛劍。師曰。拽出死屍著。

Chan Master Tong of Longjing in Hangzhou. Sthavira Chuxi asked, 'What is the dragon of Longjing [Dragon Well]?' The master said, 'Its spirit is naturally distinct; / A divine brush cannot paint it.' The monk asked, 'Why can it not be painted?' The master said, 'Transcending the herd, it wears no horns; / It is not the same as its kind.' The monk asked, 'Can it also make rain?' The master said, 'Pervasively nourishing without bounds, / Everywhere it forms grain.' The monk said, 'Is there still a matter within the ancestral school?' The master said, 'There is.' The monk said, 'What is the matter within the ancestral school?' The master said, 'From the beginning, it has had no form or shape, / Yet in responding to things, it has never fallen short.' He asked, 'What is the hair-severing sword?' The master said, 'Drag out the dead corpse!'
