A monk asked, "What is the student's own self?"
The Master said, "Roaming mountains and enjoying waters."
The monk said, "What is the upādhyāya's own self?"
The Master said, "Fortunately, the karmadāna happens not to be here."
[A monk] asked, "How is it when one swallows everything at a single gulp?"
The Master said, "I am inside your belly."
The monk said, "Why is the upādhyāya inside the student's belly?"
The Master said, "Give me back my topic of talk!"
[A monk] asked, "What is the Way?"
The Master said, "Go!"
The monk said, "The student does not understand; please, Master, speak."
The Master said, "Your travel clearance is clear—why must there be a re-judgment?"
[A monk] asked, "When birth-and-death arrives, how can it be dispelled?"
The Master held out his hand and said, "Give me back birth-and-death."
[A monk] asked, "What is 'If one's parents do not permit it, one may not leave the household'?"
The Master said, "Shallow."
The monk said, "The student does not understand."
The Master said, "Deep."
[A monk] asked, "What is the student's own self?"
The Master said, "Are you afraid I would not know?"
[A monk] asked, "How is it when the myriad operations are all exhausted?"
The Master said, "Take away the Buddha Hall for me, and I will discuss it with you."
The monk said, "How could the Buddha Hall have anything to do with that?"
The Master shouted and said, "You deceptive fellow!"
[A monk] asked, "What is the single phrase of the separate transmission outside the teachings?"
The Master said, "Bring it forward before the assembly!"
The monk said, "How is it when it is directly so?"
The Master said, "From where does illumination stand?"
[A monk] asked, "What is the upādhyāya's house style?"
The Master said, "There is a scholar in front of the gate."
[A monk] asked, "What is the phrase that penetrates the Dharmakāya?"
The Master said, "Hiding the body within the Northern Dipper."
[A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?"
The Master said, "Prolonged rain without clearing." He also said, "The smell of gruel and rice."
[A monk] asked, "The ancients spoke horizontally and spoke vertically, yet still did not know the transcendental pivot. What is the transcendental pivot?"
The Master said, "The western mountain, the eastern ridge: green."
[A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?"
The Master said, "Losing money in the river, straining it out in the river."
The Master sometimes sat for a long time. A monk asked, "What was it like with Śākyamuni back then?"
The Master said, "The assembly has stood for a long time; quickly make three prostrations." The Master once had a verse saying:
