福州芙蓉山如體禪師。僧問。如何是古人曲調。師良久曰。聞麼。曰不聞。師示一頌曰。
Chan Master Ruti of Mount Furong in Fuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the tune of the ancients?"
The Master remained silent for a long time and said, "Do you hear it?"
The monk said, "I do not hear it."
The Master showed a verse, saying:
