20.17

雲居山昌禪師（第三世住）問相逢不相識時如何。師曰。既相逢為什麼不相識。問紅鑪猛焰時如何。師曰。裏頭是什麼。問不受商量時如何。師曰。來作什麼。曰來亦不商量。師曰。空來何益。問方丈前容身時如何。師曰。汝身大小。

Chan Master Chang of Mount Yunju (the third generation to reside there) was asked: "How is it when meeting each other yet not recognising each other?" The Master said: "Since you have met each other, why do you not recognise each other?" [A monk] asked: "How is it amidst the fierce flames of the red furnace?" The Master said: "What is inside?" [A monk] asked: "How is it when one does not accept deliberation?" The Master said: "Why have you come?" He said: "I came, yet also without deliberation." The Master said: "What is the benefit of coming in vain?" [A monk] asked: "How is it when one finds room for one's body before the abbot's quarters?" The Master said: "What is the size of your body?"
