Chan Master Zhen of Yongguang Monastery in Suzhou ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying: "If the tip of your words errs, home is ten thousand miles away. You must simply let go of your hands at the cliff edge and personally take responsibility for it yourself. After coming back to life from the ultimate demise, you cannot be deceived. As for this extraordinary principle, how could one conceal it?" A monk asked, "The Way has no crosswise paths; those who stand [upon them] are all in danger. How can one avoid being overtaken and encroached upon by crosswise paths?" The master thrust at his mouth directly with his staff. The monk said, "This is still a crosswise path." The master said, "Shut your mouth!"
