Upādhyāya Xiangcheng of Jingzhao. When he first visited Upādhyāya Tong, he asked, "What is it like when one resembles two?" Tong said, "One fools you." The Master was thereupon awakened. A monk asked, "When the sights of the three lights fade, what about the matter of illumination?" The Master said, "Before the peak of Chaoyi, five colors are planted." The monk said, "What about the matter that does not involve ornate coloring?" The Master said, "Now I have specially come across the river." The monk asked, "Please bring forth and sing the one transcendental path." The Master said, "The fishing line's hook cannot draw it out." The monk asked, "Did Niutou after all attain the Fourth Patriarch's intention?" The Master said, "Writing on sand without adding a dot drops a thousand characters." The monk said, "What about after the dot is added?" The Master said, "Separately take a pinch to distribute to humans and devas." The monk said, "If so, then everyone has a share." The Master said, "And what about you?" The monk asked, "What is it like when the pouch has no thread to tie an ant, and the kitchen is devoid of grains that gather flies?" The Master said, "Daily giving without seeking; thought obtained from delusion."
