疎山證禪師（第二世住）初參仁和尚。得旨後遊歷諸方。謁投子同禪師。投子問曰。近離什麼處。曰延平來。投子曰。還將得劍來麼。曰將得來投子曰。呈似老僧看。師乃指面前地上。投子便休。師遂去。三日後投子問主事。新到僧在什麼處。曰當時去也。投子曰。三十年學馬伎昨日被驢撲。師住後僧問。如何是就事學師曰。著衣掃地。曰如何是就理學。師曰。騎牛去穢。曰向上事如何。師曰。溥際不收。問如何是聲色中混融一句。師曰。不辨消不及。曰如何是聲色外別行一句。師曰。難逢不可得。

Chan Master Zheng of Shushan (residing in the second generation) first studied under Master Ren. After obtaining the central purport, he traveled across various regions and visited Chan Master Tong of Touzi. Touzi asked: 'Where have you recently left?' He replied: 'I have come from Yanping.' Touzi asked: 'Did you bring the sword along?' He replied: 'I have brought it.' Touzi said: 'Present it for this old monk to see.' The Master then pointed to the ground in front of him. Touzi dropped the matter, and the Master subsequently departed. Three days later, Touzi asked the director of duties: 'Where is that newly arrived monk?' The director said: 'He left at that time.' Touzi said: 'For thirty years I learned the art of horses, but yesterday I was thrown by a donkey.' After the Master took up residence, a monk asked: 'What is learning through phenomena?' The Master said: 'Wearing clothes and sweeping the ground.' The monk asked: 'What is learning through principle?' The Master said: 'Riding an ox to clear away impurities.' The monk asked: 'What about the transcendental matter?' The Master said: 'Vast and boundless, it cannot be contained.' The monk asked: 'What is the single phrase blended within sounds and forms?' The Master said: 'Indistinguishable, it cannot be consumed.' The monk asked: 'What is the single phrase operating separately outside sounds and forms?' The Master said: 'Hard to encounter, impossible to obtain.'
