20.85

江州盧山永安淨悟禪師。僧問。如何是出家底事。師曰。萬丈懸崖撒手去。曰如何是不出家底事。師曰。逈殊雪嶺安巢節。有異許由掛一瓢。問六門不通如何通信。師曰。闍梨外邊與誰相識。問脫籠頭卸角馱來時如何。師曰。換骨洗腸投紫塞。洪門切忌更銜蘆。問從上諸聖將何示人。師曰。有異祖龍行化節。逈超棲鳳越揚塵。問如何是解作客底人。師曰。寶御珍床猶尚棄。誰能歷劫傍他門。問眾手淘金誰是得者。師曰。黃帝不曾遊赤水。珠承罔象也虛然。問雪覆蘆華時如何。師曰。雖則沍凝呈瑞色。太陽輝後却迷人。

Chan Master Jingwu of Yong'an on Mount Lu in Jiangzhou. A monk asked, "What is the matter of leaving home?" The Master said, "Letting go of one's hands from a cliff of ten thousand fathoms." The monk asked, "What is the matter of not leaving home?" The Master said, "Far different from building a nest on the Snowy Mountains; unlike Xu You hanging up a single gourd." A monk asked, "When the six gates do not communicate, how does one send a message?" The Master said, "Whom do you know on the outside, ācārya?" A monk asked, "How is it when one takes off the halter, sheds the horns, and comes carrying a pack?" The Master said, "Changing the bones and washing the intestines, one flees to the Purple Frontier; at the Hong Gate, take utmost care not to hold a reed in your mouth again." A monk asked, "With what have the sages from antiquity shown people?" The Master said, "Different from the First Dragon's season of transformation; far surpassing the perched phoenix crossing the flying dust." A monk asked, "What is a person who knows how to be a guest?" The Master said, "Even a precious carriage and fine bed are abandoned; who could pass through kalpas leaning by another's door?" A monk asked, "Many hands pan for gold; who is the one that gets it?" The Master said, "The Yellow Emperor never traveled to the Red Water; that the pearl was received by Wangxiang was also in vain." A monk asked, "How is it when snow covers the reed flowers?" The Master said, "Although frozen solid, it presents an auspicious color; after the sun shines, it instead confuses people."
