Zen Master Zhiyuan of Zifu Monastery in Fuzhou was a native of Lianjiang in Fuzhou. He left the household in his youth, going to Zen Master Faxuan at Guanyin Monastery on Mount Xiashan to shave his head and receive full ordination. He served diligently and respectfully, focusing on recitation. One day Zen Master Xuan said to him, "Seeing your superior faculties, you are capable of undertaking the great matter. Why do you not travel and study widely, instead of stagnating here?" The master then bowed, took his leave, and traveled through various regions. Arriving at Jingqing in Yuezhou, he paid homage to Great Master Shunde. He then asked, "What is the place where all Buddhas make their appearance in the world?" Shunde said, "Everyone wants to know." The master said, "If so, the eyes of the multitude are hard to deceive." Shunde said, "Principle can bind a leopard." Because of this, the master awakened to the profound purport. In the third year of Xiande of the Zhou dynasty (bingchen), the prefect of Fuzhou led officials, monks, and Taoists, a thousand people in all, to invite the master to open the hall and preach the Dharma at Zifu Monastery (at that time called Dongchan Monastery). A monk asked, "Whose song does the master sing? Whose tradition of the school do you inherit?" The master said, "The moon before the snow peak; bright within the waves of Mirror Lake." [A monk] asked, "When Buddhas appear in the world, heaven rains four kinds of flowers and the earth quakes in six ways. What auspicious sign does the upādhyāya have today?" The master said, "Not a single thing arises, yet the whole body is exposed. Who knows the radiance before their eyes?" [A monk] asked, "What is the phrase that points directly?" The master said, "What is it?" The master also said, "Do you understand? If you understand it, you are finished right now. If you do not understand, it will take kalpas counted in dust and sand. Merely based on the lot of you worthy ones, the mind-source of ancient Buddhas is clearly exposed and manifest right before you. Filling heaven and covering earth, the myriad forms and phenomena are your own house style. Buddhas and sentient beings originally have no difference. Nirvāṇa, birth, and death are the workings of phantom illusions. The true constancy of the nature-ground does not require cultivation and realization." The master also said, "If you wish to know this matter, it is clearly exposed in broad daylight, without an inch of grass covering it. Simply take it upon yourselves; it saves the most effort." In this way the master served the assembly for twenty-two years. On the sixteenth day of the ninth month in the second year of Taiping Xingguo (dingchou), he sounded the bell to take leave of the assembly. On the twenty-seventh day, at the hour of the dragon, he calmly sat and passed away. His age was eighty-three; his monastic age was sixty-three."
