22.15

福州白鹿師貴禪師開堂日。有僧問。西峽一派不異馬頭。白鹿千峯何似鷄足。師曰。大眾一時驗看。問如何是白鹿家風。師曰。向汝道什麼。僧曰。恁麼即學人知時去也。師曰。知時底人合到什麼田地。僧曰。不可更喃喃地。師曰。放過即不可。問牛頭未見四祖時百鳥銜華供養。見後為什麼不來。師曰。曙色未分人盡望。及乎天曉也如常。

Chan Master Shigui of Bailu in Fuzhou. On the day he opened the hall, a monk asked, "A single stream from the Western Gorge is no different from Matou; how do the thousand peaks of Bailu compare to Jizu?" The Master said, "Let the great assembly test and examine it at once." The monk asked, "What is the house style of Bailu?" The Master said, "What did I say to you?" The monk said, "If so, then the student understands the time." The Master said, "What realm should a person who understands the time reach?" The monk said, "One must not chatter on further." The Master said, "Letting you off won't do." The monk asked, "Before Niutou had seen the Fourth Patriarch, hundreds of birds held flowers in their beaks as offerings; why did they not come after he saw him?" The Master said, "Before the dawn light separates, everyone looks toward it; when the sky grows light, it is just as usual."
