22.17

福州安國院從貴禪師。僧問。禪宮大敞法眾雲臻。向上一路請師決擇。師曰。素非時流。師有時上堂示眾云。禪之與道拈向一邊著。佛之與祖是什麼破草鞋。恁麼告報莫屈著諸人麼。若道屈著即且行脚去。若道不屈著也須合取口始得。珍重。又有時上堂曰。直是不遇梁朝安國也謾不過。珍重。僧問。請師舉唱宗乘。師曰。今日打禾明日搬柴。問牛頭未見四祖時如何。師曰。香罏對繩床。僧曰。見後如何。師曰。門扇對露柱。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。若問家風即答家風。僧曰。學人不問家風時作麼生。師曰。胡來漢去。問諸餘即不問。省要處乞師一言。師曰。還得省要麼。師下堂曰。純陀獻供。珍重。

Chan Master Conggui of Anguo Monastery in Fuzhou. A monk asked, 'The Chan palace is flung wide open, and the Dharma assembly gathers like clouds. We request the Master to decide the transcendental path.' The Master said, 'I have never been of the current fashion.' The Master sometimes went up to the hall and instructed the assembly, saying, 'Put Chan and the Way to one side! What broken straw sandals are the Buddhas and patriarchs? Giving such a report, do I do you people an injustice? If you say it does you an injustice, then go off on pilgrimage for now. If you say it does not do you an injustice, you must also keep your mouth shut. Take care.' Another time he went up to the hall and said, 'Even if [Bodhidharma] had not encountered the Liang dynasty, Anguo could not be deceived. Take care.' A monk asked, 'We request the Master to expound the ancestral vehicle.' The Master said, 'Thrashing grain today, hauling firewood tomorrow.' [A monk] asked, 'How was it before Niutou met the Fourth Patriarch?' The Master said, 'The incense burner faces the rope chair.' The monk said, 'How was it after he met him?' The Master said, 'The door leaf faces the open pillar.' [A monk] asked, 'What is the Master's house style?' The Master said, 'If you ask about the house style, I answer about the house style.' The monk said, 'What about when a student does not ask about the house style?' The Master said, 'Barbarians come, Chinese go.' [A monk] asked, 'I do not ask about anything else; please grant the Master a single word at the essential point.' The Master said, 'Can you get the essential point?' The Master stepped down from the hall and said, 'Cunda presents the offering. Take care.'
