22.23

福州興聖滿禪師。師上堂曰。覿面分付不待文宣。具眼投機喚作參玄上士。若能如此所以宗風不墜。僧問。昔日靈山會裏今朝興聖筵中。和尚親傳如何舉唱。師曰。欠汝一問。

Chan Master Man of Xingsheng in Fuzhou. The Master went up to the hall and said, 'Face-to-face transmission does not await cultural propagation. Matching the opportune moment with an eye [of wisdom] is called being a superior practitioner who investigates the profound. If one can be like this, the house style will not fall into ruin.' A monk asked, 'In the assembly on Vulture Peak of old, in the feast at Xingsheng today—how does the Master expound what he personally received?' The Master said, 'I owe you a question.'
