22.45

泉州西明院琛禪師。僧問。如何是和尚家風。師曰。竹箸瓦椀。僧曰。忽遇上客來時如何秖待。師曰。黃韲倉米飯。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。問取露柱看。

Chan Master Chen of Ximing Monastery in Quanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Bamboo chopsticks, earthenware bowl." The monk asked, "If an honoured guest should suddenly arrive, how would you entertain him?" The Master said, "Yellow pickled greens and stored-granary rice." [The monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?" The Master said, "Go and ask the exposed pillar and see."
