22.57

韶州資福和尚。僧問。不問宗乘請師心印。師曰。不答遮箇話。曰為什麼不答。師曰。不副前言。問覿面難逢處。如何顧險夷。乞師垂半偈。免使後人疑。師曰。鋒前一句超調御。擬問如何歷劫違。曰恁麼即東山西嶺時人知有。未審資福庭前誰家風月。師曰。領取前話。

Upādhyāya Zifu of Shaozhou. A monk asked, "Not asking about the ancestral vehicle, I ask the master for the mind-seal." The Master said, "I do not answer such words." [The monk] said, "Why do you not answer?" The Master said, "It does not accord with the previous words." [The monk] asked: "Where face-to-face encounters are hard to meet, / How does one watch over danger and ease? / I beg the master to bestow half a verse, / To spare later people from doubt." The Master said: "The single phrase before the point surpasses the Tamer; / If you try to ask how it is, you diverge for kalpas on end." [The monk] said, "If so, then people of the time know of the eastern mountain and western ridge; who has custody of the wind and moon before Zifu's courtyard?" The Master said, "Understand the previous words."
