石門山乾明寺慧徹禪師（第二世住）問金烏出海光天地與此光陰事若何。師曰。龍出洞兮風雨至。海嶽傾時日月明。問從上諸聖向什麼處去也。師曰。露柱掛燈籠。問師唱誰家曲宗風嗣阿誰。師曰。片雲生鳳嶺樵子處處明。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。解接無根樹能挑海底燈。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。少林澄九鼎動浪百華新。問如何是佛法大意。師曰。三門外松樹子見生見長。問一毫未發時如何。師曰。羿善不調弓箭透三江口。問如何是佛。師曰。樵子度荒郊騎牛草不露。

Chan Master Huiche of Qianming Temple on Mount Shimen (dwelling as the second generation). [A monk] asked, 'When the golden crow emerges from the sea and illuminates heaven and earth, how is it with this passage of time?' The master said, 'A dragon leaves its cave and wind and rain arrive; when seas and peaks topple, sun and moon are bright.' [The monk] asked, 'Where have all the sages from of old gone?' The master said, 'An open pillar hangs a lantern.' [The monk] asked, 'Whose song does the master sing? Whose house style do you inherit?' The master said, 'A wisp of cloud arises from Feng Ridge; the woodcutter is bright everywhere.' [The monk] asked, 'What is the Upādhyāya's house style?' The master said, 'Able to graft a rootless tree, capable of picking up a lamp from the sea bottom.' [The monk] asked, 'What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?' The master said, 'Shaolin clarifies the nine tripods; stirring waves, a hundred flowers are renewed.' [The monk] asked, 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?' The master said, 'The pine tree outside the main gate—seen to be born, seen to grow.' [The monk] asked, 'How is it before a single hair has sprouted?' The master said, 'Archer Yi is good at shooting without tuning the bow; the arrow pierces the mouth of the Three Rivers.' [The monk] asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'A woodcutter crosses the desolate wilderness; riding an ox, the grass does not show.'
