23.23

潞府妙勝臻禪師。僧問。如何是妙勝境。師曰。龍藏開時貝葉分明。問金粟如來為什麼却降釋迦會裏。師曰。香山南雪山北。曰南贍部洲事又作麼生。師曰。黃河水急浪華麁。問心心寂滅即不問。如何是向上一路。師曰。一條濟水貫新羅。問遠嚮雲門南北縱橫四維上下事作麼生。師曰。今日明日。

Chan Master Zhen of Miaosheng in Lufu. A monk asked, “What is the realm of Miaosheng?”
The master said, “When the dragon canon is opened, the palm leaves are clear.”
[A monk] asked, “Why did the Golden Grain Tathāgata descend instead into Śākyamuni’s assembly?”
The master said, “South of the Fragrant Mountains, north of the Snowy Mountains.”
[The monk] said, “What about the affairs of Jambudvīpa?”
The master said, “The Yellow River’s water is swift; the waves and foam are coarse.”
[A monk] asked, “Leaving aside when mind after mind is extinguished, what is the transcendental road?”
The master said, “A single Ji River runs through Silla.”
[A monk] asked, “Looking afar to Yunmen, crossing north and south, the four directions, above and below—how are these matters?”
The master said, “Today, tomorrow.”
