23.26

韶州大梵圓和尚。師上堂示眾曰。大眾好箇時光直須努力時不待人。各自歸堂參取本善知識去。僧問。大眾雲集請師舉唱。師曰。有疑請問。師因見聖僧便問僧。此箇聖僧年多少。僧曰。恰共和尚同年。師喝之。曰遮竭斗不易道得。

Upādhyāya Yuan of Dafan in Shaozhou entered the hall and instructed the assembly, saying: 'Assembly, this is a fine season; you must exert yourselves directly, for time waits for no one. Return each of you to the hall and study your original kalyāṇamitra.' A monk asked, 'The great assembly gathers like clouds; we ask the master to raise and chant [the Dharma].' The master said, 'If you have doubts, please ask.' Because the master saw [the statue of] the holy monk, he then asked a monk, 'How old is this holy monk?' The monk said, 'Just the same age as the upādhyāya.' The master shouted at him and said, 'This is a head-over-heels somersault, not easy to say.'
