23.4

南嶽般若寺啟柔禪師。僧問西天以臘人為驗。此土如何。師曰。新羅人草鞋。問如何是千聖同歸底道理。師曰。未達苦空境無人不歎嗟。師上堂。聞三下板聲大眾始集。師因示一偈曰。

Chan Master Qirou of Bore Temple in Nanyue. A monk asked, "In the Western Heavens (India), the wax figure of a person is used as verification. How is it in this land?"
The Master said, "A Silla person's straw sandals."
[The monk] asked, "What is the principle to which the thousand sages equally return?"
The Master said, "Before attaining the realm of suffering and emptiness, there is no one who does not sigh in lamentation."
The Master ascended the hall. Hearing the clapper sound three times, the great assembly had just gathered. Thereupon the Master presented a verse, saying:
