24.21

福州昇山白龍清慕禪師。僧問。如何是白龍密用一機。師曰。汝每日用什麼。曰恁麼即徒勞側聆。禪便喝出。問一切眾生日用而不知。如何是日用底。師曰。別秖對爾爭得。問不責上來聲前一句請師道。師曰。莫是不辨麼。

Chan Master Qingmu of Bailong on Shengshan in Fuzhou. A monk asked, "What is Bailong's single function of secret operation?" The Master said, "What do you use every day?" [The monk] said, "If so, then turning an ear in listening was in vain." The Chan master then shouted him out. [A monk] asked, "All sentient beings use it daily without knowing it. What is that daily use?" The Master said, "How could another answer suffice for you?" [The monk] asked, "Without dwelling on what came before, please speak the single phrase prior to sound, Master." The Master said, "Could it be that you cannot discern it?"
