Chan Master Dinghui Xuanying of Baoqu Cloister in Zhangzhou was a native of Jinjiang County in Quanzhou. His surname was Wu. In his youth he left home at Jiufosi Cloister of Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture. Receiving full ordination, he explored the Vinaya vehicle and read through the entire canon of scriptures. Thereupon he went to Fuzhou to call upon Upādhyāya Xi of Bailong, who verified and sealed his mind-ground. He then returned to his home prefecture. The Master said, "What did you ask for instruction on just now?" [The monk] said, "The primary meaning." The Master said, "Do you call that turning around and asking?" [The monk] asked, "What is the bodhimaṇḍa of an ancient Buddha?" The Master said, "This summer there are one thousand five hundred monks in the hall." Commissioner Chen reported the Master's virtue and Way to Emperor Taizu, who bestowed a purple robe and a master's title. In the eighth year of Kaibao, as he was about to pass away, seven days in advance he sent a farewell letter to Prefect Chen and further demonstrated with a gāthā, saying:
